The role of post holders

The Students’ Union Council is the supreme governing body of the Students’ Union and it only makes sense if you, the voter, have a better insight in the functions of the Council and if the candidate you have in mind for a post is fit enough to do the same.

President:

The President is the head of the council, he/she presides over all the meetings of the Union as well as the Council and its bodies when present. He/she will be the signing authority of all types of financial transactions that include those of all the Departments and Clubs during inter as well as intra college fests. He/she has the power to speak on behalf of the Union with any authority if need be. He/she may fix an amount approved to be charged for any SU related events with due permissions but the authority to overthrow/accept the same ultimately lies in the hands of the Union. The President shall also perform the General Secretary’s duties in his absence.

General Secretary:

The General Secretary is responsible for all meetings of the Council and maintaining a record for the same. He/she will be responsible for the student representation at various fests and seminars both in the campus and elsewhere. He/she will also be responsible for maintaining the inventory of all property owned by the Union’s organs. It is his duty to monitor the functioning of various and clubs. The General Secretary must also convene at least two GBMs (General Body Meetings) during his tenure. He/she is also responsible for all financial transactions of all clubs required for the functioning of all activities other than the college fests. He/she shall perform all the duties of the President during his absence.

Cultural Secretaries:

The Cultural Secretaries shall be responsible for organising any intra-college cultural fest. They can organise/initiate cultural exchanges with other campuses/institutions/organisations provided they are not related to inter college fests. They can organise events within the college with the help of Hostel Representatives for example Renaissance, Ethnic Day etc. They shall preside over all meetings of the Cultural Senate.

Sports Secretaries:

The Sports Secretaries’ main duties include organising sports fests within the college, in coordination with the H-Reps, organising/initiating sports meets with other college/institutions/organisations provided both of which are not related to inter-college fests. Some of the intra college fests include RIXA, Blitzkrieg etc. They are also responsible for maintaining the inventory of all sports equipment and facilities. They will work hand-in-hand with Sports Council to improve sports facilities in the college. They shall preside over all meetings of the Sports Senate.

Higher Degree Representative:

Every year along with first degree students the Union also accommodates a Higher Degree Representative who will be the bridge between the higher degree students (M.E. & Ph.D.) and the Council. He/she shall be responsible to gather the needs and demands of the higher degree students and also represent their opinions regarding any issues raised.

Hostel Representatives:

The H – reps shall monitor process of inventory management allotted to them and report discrepancies in the same to the Council and the Corroboration and Review Committee. They will work closely with other members of the council to organise various events and competitions within the campus and also within their own hostels.

Student Mess Council:

Though not part of the Council, the SMC too is elected during the general elections. It consists of a maximum of five members. The Council is the link between the mess caterers and the Union. Their main duties include selecting a wholesome and balanced menu and addressing all issues regarding the mess affairs as well as the food courts on the campus.
